She would then leave him broken hearted on her return to the call of sea. If one was lucky enough to steal her magical cap however, she would be unable to return. She was his for as long as he could keep it close, and hidden. (Unless of course she dragged you, cap and all, back to the sea along with her, which was often the case when you’d try to force her to stick around.)
